Murder gets personal when human remains are found in the beach cottage that realtors Regan McHenry and her husband, Tom Kiley, buy. The murder victim has been hidden away for sixteen years, and although the authorities quickly discover his identity, the trail to his killer is cold after so many years.
Regan has sworn off playing amateur detective, but when it becomes clear the police have to focus on more pressing crimes, she has to break her promise. As her friend police ombudsman Dave Everett says, “Your house, Regan, your murder.”
Welcome back to Santa Cruz, the community whose unofficial motto is “Keep Santa Cruz Weird,” for the twists and turns of the third book in the Regan McHenry Mystery Series.

It took me a couple of chapters to get engaged in this story, perhaps because I've not read the previous books to have some background on the main characters. After that, I began to enjoy the book and become intrigued by the mystery. About halfway through the book, though, it started to develop problems. Some of the descriptions seemed like filler rather than developing the characters' personality, etc. For example, the first few detailed descriptions of what Regan and her husband Tom are eating show us that they are adventurous (in their choice of foods) and fairly well-to-do (to be able to go out to eat at fine restaurants often). After that's been established, in other ways as well as their culinary tastes, detailed information like this is redundant and unnecessary.
I was puzzled as to why Regan would want to buy a 'cottage' that seemed relatively close to her house. The explanation of how the body got to where it was, was, in my opinion, completely unbelievable.
I thought that Regan was fairly young, not more than 30, so I was surprised when halfway through the book, her adult sons are mentioned. They didn't add much to the story...more redundancy.
I didn't find it very realistic that Dave, the detective, would tell Regan so many details about the murder or let her continue investigating it on her own, in spite of the extreme danger Regan often ended up in, or that he would come running every time she called him. Regan herself reveals details to the people she talks to that compromise the investigation; this freely distributed information also causes some of the danger. In addition, she does stupid things like going off by herself to places that even she knows are a bad idea.
Finally, by the last chapter, the killer now tells Regan the whole story, and Regan tries to keep the killer talking. They both have lengthy monologues that sound so much alike in voice that I couldn't always tell who was talking.
All in all, the book was fairly good at the start and got bogged down in unnecessary detail, a far-fetched plot line, and poor character development. If you are a fan of this author, you might be willing to overlook these problems. If not, you may not want to spend the time to read a rather long mystery. I would give it 2.5 stars if that were possible.

Buying Murder Regan McHenry Real Estate Mysteries Book 3 edition by Nancy Lynn Jarvis Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Nancy Lynn Jarvis did a superb job of mixing real estate info with the curiosity of her main character Regan McHenry. This story contained a roller coaster ride for the reader as one suspect after another was detained and then discharged. The author kept you guessing right till the end. good job.
The book held my interest and had a pretty good story. I couldn't figure out who the killer was so that kept me reading. But I felt there was too much descriptive verbiage, unnecessary verbiage that detracted from the story. And I did not find the ending fulfilling to the story. I felt like it was cut short and then just described to me instead of me reading about it as it happened.
This is not only a fun and interesting mystery, but anyone that has ever bought or sold a house, or plans to, will learn something about the real estate business, Since I was a Realtor at one time, I find it factual and was interested in the way things are done in different parts of the country. Don't misunderstand, this aspect of the book does not make it boring or talk down to the reader--it is just there and subtly works it way into the plot and how the mystery is solved.
When Regan McHenry and her husband buy an old cottage for a second home they are not prepared for what they find hidden inside and the ensuing mayhem brought about by their discovery.
Ms. Jarvis brought alive not only the quirkiness of Santa Cruz but also the danger/fulfillment of being a realtor. Take more than a passing glance into the background of any property you wish to purchase. You never know what might lurk within the walls and who might have something to hide!
Buying Murder Large Print Edition This book was crisp, with literary twists and turns, but with that comforting knowledge that the good guys would win out in the end. I especially appreciated the careful, straightforward, and lean use of descriptive prose. And, I'll admit, I really love the Santa Cruz area, so I was able to apply some images of my own as the novel progressed. I downloaded the edition (which also goes to 's Cloud Reader), so I was able to reward myself with a chapter or two as a break from other computer work by merely clicking on the open tab.
I just fell in love with this book. It is the most cutest book I have ever read. I love how it was worded so perfectly. It just was so perfect and warming. You got to read this book. I have really enjoyed this book. You could have a cup of coffee and just read for hours if you have time. It is the most exciting and compelling story I have read. The words are so smooth and inspiring. I thought the characters were so real and warm especially the cop he was just a great character. I also loved the enthusiasm the characters had for each other they just seemed to be so real and down to earth. YOU GOT TO READ THIS BOOK you won't regret it with hot coffee or hot chocolate and get comfy it is a book of recommendation.
This is a murder mystery, a different kind of love story, and and a thriller all in one book.
I enjoyed that we were taken along as Regan discovered clues and fit the pieces together.
I appreciate that Regan is not a twenty something tall thin blonde in stilleto heels.
I like that she is mature, has experiences, and still follows her impulses now and again, even if she intuitively knows they will lead her into danger.
I liked the way the characters were written and the action was described.
While it was a fun, relaxing read, it was also exciting.
I have a feeling Regan may find herself in trouble again and I will be waiting to read about it.
